I knew sound was powerful at a young age. I would go to bed every night listening to music created by a songwriter that claimed to be ‘healing’, aiming to relieve anxiety, and promote spiritual renewal. I was not an anxious kid, but my mom fell in love with the music at a craft vendor event and decided to put it to the test. This music had a way of calming me and setting the tone for bedtime. I would find myself using my imagination, creating scenes in my head to go along with the music, before I drifted off. Out of three children, I ended up being the only one who grew up interested in playing music and singing. I don’t claim it to be ‘healing.’ My goal is to reduce stress, and we all know that stress can manifest in many ways if we don’t do anything to manage it.
Years passed and then came the 2019 pandemic. I really got back into music, but I didn’t rush it. It’s been a slow and intentional process of collecting instruments and learning about the history and culture each instrument comes from. I really feel like sound is a perfect aid to meditation. It really can take you places. An ocean drum can take you to your favorite water shoreline. A rain stick to a rainy walk in the woods. Seed rattles can take you by your favorite gently flowing river. I’ve found that voice backed by good intentions can be one of the most powerful tools, and I learned this especially after taking my Karuna Reiki training.
